How To Make A Snap Pea Gimlet

A snap pea pod is actually a fruit - and it works especially well in a Gimlet.

If you’re wondering why you’d ever put a vegetable in a cocktail, there’s something you should know. A snap pea pod is actually a fruit. It’s a crisp, flavorful fruit that doesn’t have much sugar, and, for some reason, it works especially well in a Gimlet. Maybe it’s because most gins already have a confusing number of flavors going on, or maybe it’s because limes are green and so are peas. Don’t overthink it. Just make this crisp, unique cocktail for the next person who walks through your front door.

How It Tastes: Crisp, Limey, Confusingly Good

The Snap Pea Gimlet

You’ll Need:

  • Rocks glass

  • Ice

  • .75 ounce lime juice

  • .75 ounce simple syrup

  • 2 ounces gin

  • 6 snap peas

Step One:

In case you forgot, we’re making a Snap Pea Gimlet - so we’re going to start with some snap peas. Get around five of them, and muddle them in the bottom of a shaker. If you don’t have a muddler, find a big wooden spoon and use the handle to smash your peas. No need to get all worked up and turn them into a paste - just break them up a bit.

Step Two: Simple Syrup

From here on out, you’re just going to be making a regular Gimlet. So add .75 ounce simple syrup to your shaker. (Simple syrup is equal parts warm water and white sugar, stirred until dissolved.)

Step Three: Lime Juice

There’s no scenario in which we’ll tell you to use bottled lime juice. You should know that by now. Fresh lime juice is key, so juice a lime, and put .75 ounce lime juice in your shaker.

Step Four: Gin

Gin is our first choice for this cocktail, and vodka comes in second place. Any other clear spirit (like pisco, blanco tequila, or white rum) also works, so follow your heart. Our hearts emphatically tell us gin, but take 2 ounces of whatever alcohol you choose and add it to your shaker.

Step Five: Shake

Next, add around 6 ice cubes to your shaker, and shake everything vigorously for about 20 seconds. Once you’re done, strain your cocktail in a rocks glass filled to the rim with ice. For a garnish, we like to julienne a single pea and set it on top - but if you don’t have the patience for that, just stick a whole pea in the side. This is, technically, a healthy cocktail.
