15 Things You Can Give Your Server Instead Of A Tip

Big news in the restaurant world - it was announced yesterday that Danny Meyer will soon eliminate tipping in all of his restaurants. Whether or not this will truly improve the long term economic prospects of the people who work in his establishments remains to be seen, but we applaud it. Anything that potentially results in better and fairer compensation for hard working people is a positive in our book.

Here's the thing though. We Americans have been trained to tip 20% on everything from a hot dog to a hair cut since the day this country was founded. If you can't leave someone a little extra dough for a night of good service, how do you show your gratitude?

We've got some ideas. Here are 15 things you can give your server instead of a tip.

  • Advice on how to run a startup.

  • A hand written Paoulo Coelho quote.

  • A visual demonstration on how to properly pack a business suit for a trip such that it does not wrinkle.

  • Compliments but not too many compliments.

  • Your copy of Catcher In The Rye.

  • A wink.

  • A secret handshake for only the two of you to share.

  • A Friday Night Lights style pep talk.

  • Your favorite season of Friends on DVD.

  • A link to a funny video where something unexpected happens.

  • A full review of your dining experience but without using words.

  • Help with bussing the table.

  • A cold brewski.

  • A framed motivational poster of a guy rock climbing and the word DREAMS written in Helvetica above him.

  • Bitcoin.

There you have it. Now you can end a meal on a high note and know that you gave a little something extra. Feel free to get creative and come up with some ideas of your own. And if anyone out there is sitting on Friends Season 7 that they don't want, let me know. I'll come serve you dinner for it.
