One day, you might become a party magician. When that happens, you’re going to need at least one good trick - like turning a regular Margarita into a Watermelon Margarita. It might sound complicated, but it only requires one additional ingredient, and you’ll never guess what it is.

The Watermelon Margarita

You’ll Need:

  • Rocks glass
  • Ice
  • .75 ounce lime juice
  • .5 ounce agave, .75 ounce triple sec, or .75 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 ounces watermelon juice
  • 2 ounces tequila

Step One: Watermelon Juice

First, you’re going to need a whole watermelon (or at least some watermelon chunks). Next, you should stare at that watermelon until you figure out how to juice it, or you should just follow these instructions: Either slice up your watermelon and run it through a juicer, or cut it up and blend it. (If you’re going the blender route, you’ll probably need to do so in batches, depending on the size of your watermelon.) Once you have a liquid mixture, locate a fine-mesh strainer or sieve, put a paper towel over it, and set that over a bowl. Now pour the contents of your blender over that paper towel-covered strainer, and you’ll get pulpless watermelon juice. Take 2 ounces of this juice, and add it to a shaker.

Step Two: Lime Juice

Once you’ve juiced a watermelon, juicing a lime should be a breeze. Just cut a lime in half, and squeeze until you have .75 ounces lime juice. Add that to your shaker.

Step Three: Agave/Triple Sec/Simple Syrup

You need something to sweeten your Margarita, and you should know that agave is our sweetening agent of choice for this drink. So ideally, you’ll add .5 ounce agave. But if you can’t find agave, there are a few other options. Triple sec is the traditional choice for Margaritas, so you can always .75 ounce of a triple sec like Cointreau. Alternatively, you can use .75 ounces of simple syrup (which is equal parts warm water and white sugar, stirred until dissolved). Add your sweetener to your shaker.

Step Four: Tequila

Without tequila, a Margarita is just a cup of limeade. So find a good blanco tequila, and add 2 ounces to your shaker.

Step Five: Shake

Finally, shake everything hard for about 15 seconds. Once you’re finished, strain your fuchsia cocktail into a rocks glass rimmed with salt. That last part is important. If you think you can just skip a salt rim because isn’t that essential, think again. Salt and watermelon are very good friends who go back a long way, and you’re going to want to enjoy them together. Garnish with a lime wheel.
