How To Make A Last Word

For a Last Word, you’ll need both Green Chartreuse and maraschino liqueur, but this cocktail is worth the investment.

Walk into any cocktail bar and ask for a Last Word, and you’ll immediately seem like a person of taste and distinction. At the very least, you’ll gain your bartender’s respect. The Last Word is a delicious and refreshing cocktail, with a complex, unmistakable flavor - and it’s also pretty easy to make. The only downside is, you probably don’t have the ingredients lying around your house, but go ahead and invest in some Green Chartreuse and maraschino liqueur. Then drink your investments. That’s maybe how investing works.

The Last Word

You’ll Need:

  • Ice

  • A coupe or martini glass

  • .75 ounce lime juice

  • .75 ounce maraschino liqueur

  • .75 ounce Green Chartreuse

  • .75 ounce gin

Step One: Lime Juice

You may have noticed we’re going to use equal parts of everything. How easy. Put .75 ounce of lime juice into your cocktail shaker.

Step Two: Maraschino liqueur

Maraschino liqueur is intensely sweet and flavorful, and, for those reasons, it’s typically used in small amounts. But the Last Word calls for a full three quarters of an ounce - and it blends seamlessly into the drink without being too cloying. Add .75 ounce of maraschino to your shaker.

Step Three: Gin

Typically you’ll add something like gin last when making a cocktail - because, if you remember, Rule No. 5 says to add more expensive ingredients last - but most gin is actually cheaper than Green Chartreuse. So we’re adding it third. Pour .75 ounce in your shaker.

Step Four: Green Chartreuse

Allegedly, only two monks in the hills outside Voiron, France know the exact recipe for Green Chartreuse, which uses 130 different plants and herbs. To say we respect this bright green beverage would be an understatement. It’s a perfect after-dinner drink, and the 55% ABV helps cut through the sweetness. Donate .75 ounces to your cocktail shaker.

Step Five: Shake

Shake everything, hard, for 12 seconds. Once you’ve finished, strain your Last Word into a coupe or martini glass (whichever you have). No garnish necessary.
