How To Make A Vodka Stinger

A retro drink for when you need something bright green after dinner.

Just because a drink isn’t popular anymore, that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Tastes change, and people forget. That’s why we’d like to take this time to resurrect the Vodka Stinger. This cocktail only has two ingredients (vodka and creme de menthe), and it’s exactly what you would have drunk after dinner in 1959. Unsurprisingly, it mostly tastes like mint and vodka, and, due to the creme de menthe, it has a bright green color that’ll remind you of wheatgrass, Jolly Ranchers, and jello molds from the 1950s. Make a batch for your next dinner party, and serve them when people start yawning.

If you happen to be looking for something to watch tonight while you drink a Vodka Stinger, this cocktail makes a lyrical appearance in Steven Sondheim’s musical Company. For more movie & drink ideas, check out our guide to 9 Iconic Cocktail & Movie Pairings.

Vodka Stinger

You’ll Need:

  • Ice

  • Coupe or martini glass

  • 2.25 ounces vodka

  • .75 ounce creme de menthe

Step One: Creme De Menthe

Creme de menthe tastes like mint. And that’s because it’s a mint-flavored liqueur. Sometimes it’s clear, and sometimes it’s bright green - and, while either variety is fine to use for this drink, we think the green kind is much more fun. Add .75 ounce to your shaker.

Step Two: Vodka

Creme de menthe is delicious, but you probably don’t want to drink a whole cup of it. That’s why we’re adding vodka. It’s effectively just going to tame the minty taste a bit, while also adding a large dose of alcohol. Pour 2.25 ounces vodka into your shaker.

Step Three: Shake

Add 5 or 6 ice cubes to your shaker, and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Next, strain your cocktail into a coupe or martini glass, and don’t worry about finding a garnish. A bright green cocktail doesn’t require such things.
