How To Make A Gold Rush

A Gold Rush is basically a Whiskey Sour made with honey syrup, which gives it a more complex flavor.

One thing you should know is that you can substitute honey syrup for simple syrup in just about any cocktail. And once you do that, the honey syrup cocktail usually gets a different, better name than the original. A Bees Knees, for example, is really just a Gin Sour with honey, and a Gold Rush is nearly identical to a Whiskey Sour - just a little more complex. The honey brings a new dimension to the drink, which may make you want to lie in a field surrounded by flowers while someone pours several of these cocktails in your mouth.

How It Tastes: Tart, Rich, Like A Bourbon-Soaked Meadow

The Gold Rush

You’ll Need:

  • Ice

  • Rocks Glass

  • .75 ounce honey syrup

  • .75 ounce lemon juice

  • 2 ounces bourbon

Step One: Honey Syrup

Why honey syrup and not just honey? Because honey won’t really dissolve if you throw it straight into your cocktail. You need to cut it with some water. So take one part honey and one part hot water, then stir it up for 30 seconds or so until everything is integrated. Then, add .75 ounce of this honey syrup to your shaker.

Step Two: Lemon Juice

When you make a burger at home, do you use fresh beef, or do you find some beef jerky, grind it up, and form it into a patty? Hopefully the former. And it’s equally important that you use fresh juice when making a cocktail. Find a lemon, squeeze it, and put .75 ounce lemon juice in your shaker.

Step Three: Bourbon

Remember, if you add gin, this is a Bees Knees. And, while we like saying the name of that cocktail because it makes us feel like old-timey reporters describing a story that might advance our careers, we’re here to drink a Gold Rush. So pour 2 ounces bourbon in your shaker.

Step Four: Shake

Add a big handful of ice to your shaker. Next, give everything a good, hard shake for at least 15 seconds. Once you’re finished, it should be ice-cold and slightly frothy. Pour this cocktail over ice in a rocks glass, garnish with a lemon twist if you somehow have the patience for that (or feel free to leave out), and do your best to find something approximating a flowery meadow to lie down and drink this in.
