Sephardic Sisters
Along with being the first city to have a skyscraper and also having the ex-tallest building in the world, Chicago can claim another marvel of engineering: the vegan food at Sephardic Sisters. This counter-service Middle Eastern restaurant in Uptown is making some incredibly meaty plant-based food. Dishes like their gyro pita or their steak shawarma (both of which come with spicy housemade zhug) are so convincing you might ask for proof that no animals were involved. Plus, while you’re fully focused on a jalapeño falafel pita or grape leaves with a zesty harissa sauce, you won’t even notice (or care about) the bare walls and complete lack of decor.
