Annapurna Simply Vegetarian
Annapurna, a vegetarian counter-service cafe in Rogers Park, has the best dosas on Devon, and probably in the city. The small dining space tends to fill up quickly during the weekend lunch rush, with people who clearly know that the masala dosa is light with delicately crispy edges, and stuffed with a well-spiced potato curry that isn’t just a pile of mush. Besides the dosas and other South Indian dishes like idli and vada (all of which come with a tangy sambar and spicy coconut chutney), there are Gujarati thalis, vegetable platters with things like malai kofta and bhindi masala, and delicious, if a little greasy, chole bhature. Skip the samosas and go for one of the other 9,372,505 different types of chaats. Or grab a Thumbs Up and some cassata ice cream from Annapurna’s little grocery section, and sit on the brightly colored patio for some fun people-watching.
