Dollar oysters used to be as easy to find as bad drivers in this city. Since the pandemic, however, a lot of restaurants have cut back on their budget bivalve offerings. Thankfully, these six spots are still doing the shucking for us, the shucking-shy who are still somehow preoccupied by the three-lane, signaless cutters.

The Spots

Little Donkey

$$$$ 505 Massachusetts Ave

Little Donkey’s new tagline should probably be, “Come for the dollar oysters, stay for the fried chicken sandwich with papaya slaw.” OK, we admit, it’s a little clunky for real-world use. Nevertheless, dollar oysters are available from 5-6pm, Tues-Sat. And let’s face it - these days, there’s not much else to do in the evenings.

Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar

$$$$ West Broadway

So you’re at Little Donkey every other night, but you need somewhere else to go on Mondays. Good thing Loco has a dollar oyster special every Monday from 11am-10pm, which is the perfect amount of time to eat approximately 82 oysters and sip on (hopefully fewer) tequila flights. And what about Sundays, you ask? Our in-house physician doesn’t recommend daily bivalve consumption. But hey, you do you.

State Street Provisions

$$$$ 255 State St

Downtown spot State Street Provisions has dollar oysters every day from 4-6pm, and again during their undefined “late-night” hours. We’ve never really thought of raw oysters as a midnight snack, but that may be because we haven’t spent enough time with the New England bourgeoisie yet.

Russell House Tavern

$$$$ 14 JFK St

In every other year except 2020 (and maybe 1918), your dollar oyster slurping experience at Russell House Tavern would probably be interrupted by throngs of Harvard-curious tourists and their obnoxiously loud tour-group leader. Take advantage of the megaphone-less air between 4-6pm on Mon-Thurs and enjoy your oysters in peace.

Warren Tavern

$$$$ 2 Pleasant St

Warren Tavern was apparently one of Paul Revere’s favorite places, though we can’t verify if he walked here from his house or chose the less carbon-friendly option of riding his horse. In any case, you can grab some cheap oysters at this 200-year-old establishment from 3-6pm, Mon-Fri.

Black Lamb

AmericanSeafoodFrench  in  South End
$$$$ 571 Tremont St

Black Lamb is the only place we know of that has dollar oysters available for lunch on a daily basis. In fact, they’re available from 11am-5pm every day - just in case you’re looking for an outdoor patio for both your work and seafood needs. Don’t forget to grab some cheddar and scallion house rolls with maple butter too. They’re a little more than $1, but you already saved money on the oysters so you can be a little more generous.
