Shoyu Sugar
Short of booking a flight to Oahu, the closest (and cheapest) way to get a little taste of Hawai’i is by going to Shoyu Sugar. This food trailer is located in a big lot near Anderson Mill and 183 with tons of parking and a few picnic tables out front—there’s not a ton of atmosphere, but you’re here for the food. The menu is small and simple, offering a few Hawaiian classics, like chicken katsu, BBQ short ribs, and (Korean) fried chicken. Everything comes with rice, and the portions are more than generous—we’re usually full from a “mini” for less than $10. You’ll also find weekly specials, like loco moco and furikake salmon, but check their website before heading out. Make sure to save room for some li hing gushers or butter mochi at the end.
